COPPA Parental Consent Procedures
Detailed procedures for obtaining verifiable parental consent under the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) for Kids on the Yard services
COPPA Parental Consent Procedures
Effective Date: March 19, 2026
Overview
The Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) requires that operators of websites and online services directed to children under 13, or that have actual knowledge that they are collecting personal information from children under 13, obtain verifiable parental consent before collecting, using, or disclosing such information.
Kids on the Yard is committed to protecting children's privacy and complying fully with COPPA requirements.
When Parental Consent Is Required
Services Involving Children Under 13
Parental consent is required when:
- A child under 13 will use any Kids on the Yard online service
- We collect personal information from a child under 13
- A parent enrolls a child under 13 in tutoring, coaching, or educational services
- A child under 13 will participate in video sessions, online classes, or interactive features
Information That Triggers COPPA
Personal information under COPPA includes:
- Full name
- Home or physical address
- Email address
- Telephone number
- Social Security number
- Photo, video, or audio file containing a child's image or voice
- Geolocation information
- Persistent identifiers (cookies, IP addresses) when used for behavioral targeting
- Any other information that permits physical or online contact
Verifiable Parental Consent Methods
Kids on the Yard uses two FTC-approved methods to obtain verifiable parental consent at the time of enrollment:
Method 1: Electronic Signature on Enrollment Agreement (Primary Method)
When a parent or legal guardian enrolls a child under 13 in Kids on the Yard services:
- The enrollment flow presents a COPPA-compliant parental consent form within the digital enrollment agreement
- The parent reviews the disclosures: what personal information is collected, how it is used, whether it is shared, and parental rights
- The parent provides an electronic signature consenting to collection
- Kids on the Yard records the signed consent with a timestamp, IP address, and the consenting parent's identity
- This method is recognized under 16 CFR Section 312.5(b) as a verifiable parental consent method
Method 2: Credit or Debit Card Verification via Stripe (Payment Method)
In conjunction with paid enrollment:
- The parent provides credit or debit card information through Kids on the Yard's payment processor (Stripe)
- Stripe processes a transaction that provides notification to the cardholder of record
- The transaction confirms that the person providing consent has access to a payment instrument tied to the parent of record
- This method is recognized under 16 CFR Section 312.5(b)(2) as a verifiable parental consent method when the transaction provides cardholder notification
Both methods are documented and retained for the period specified in the Data Retention Policy.

- Internal investigation and corrective action
- Staff retraining on COPPA requirements
Regulatory Consequences
COPPA violations may result in:
- FTC enforcement actions
- Civil penalties per violation, adjusted annually by the FTC for inflation under 16 CFR Part 1. See the FTC's current civil penalty inflation adjustments at https://www.ftc.gov/enforcement/penalty-inflation-adjustments for the current amount.
